Wildlife Garden for Littleover School

Pupils at Littleover school are developing a range of environmental improvements following a project last year that turned a unused area of the school grounds into a wildlife garden. As a part of the developments pupils cleared out a brook and then organised a duck race in conjunction with the school fete.

Recently the school has planted a wooded area and developed a ‘medieval garden’, which will demonstrate horticulture and diet of the time. Richard Watson, Environment Group Co- ordinator explains, "Many of our school departments are benefiting from the improvements. The garden will be maintained by the school’s environment group which will link in with the Duke of Edinburgh award programme. The technology department is running a design projects based on the garden, herbs will be grown as a part of our food technology studies, the art department will produce natural dyes using plants we have grown and the school is also launching a sculpture competition to design an appropriate piece for the garden". Pupils from all school years have been involved with the project.

Derby PRIDE is helping to support the school with a fund of £732. Donald Dale Derby PRIDE’s Project Officer for Sport, Youth and The Environment comments, "The Derby PRIDE fund will enable pupils to purchase a variety of plants which will attract wildlife. The planting will be carried out by pupils involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which has been running at the school for around two years".
