Salmon fishing
(M166)
Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, transfer printed in glaze, unmarked barred reverse, German or Belgian, c.1880.
Depicts three men net fishing by hand for salmon, with two men on the shore, one of whom is carrying a salmon. The pole on the cliff edge next to the lighthouse has a barrel hanging from its top. This was a signal, made by the lighthouse keeper, to say that the tide was high enough for boats to safely navigate the tidal waterway.
Minton ship tile
(M165)
Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, block printed, possibly a Reginald Till design, marked Minton Tiles Made in England - 27 8 A (and eleven dots), November 1938 or 1948.
Jeffrey tile
(M161)
Dust pressed, 4 x 4 in, moulded in relief to imitate tube lining, decorated with coloured glazes, marked Jeffrey England 48, c.1948.
Jeffrey were the final company in a long line of Hereford tile makers. Established in 1927 by JGM Jeffrey and his son, the works chemist at Thynnes tile works. They started their own tile factory on land beside Hereford Railway Station where they had six presses and continued until being taken over by H&R Johnson in 1958.
During the war tile making stopped, and the factory was used as a food storage depot. Their output was primarily mottled fireplace tiles, so the above tile was designed as an insert for a slabbed fireplace.
It was quite unusual to make decorated tiles in the late 40s as the government imposed a massive 240% purchase tax on decorated tiles in order to discourage their manufacture in persuance of austerity measures.
Deco Viking ship tile
(M188)
Dust pressed, moulded design of a stylised Viking longboat under sails and oars, 6 x 6 in, moulded mark sitting greyhound surrounded by laurel leaves with a crown above, moulded Regd. England below, T&R Boote, c.1930.
T&R Boote are not well known for 'moulded picture' tiles, but this pleasant example shows how well they were able to make such tiles.
