Plastic clay was used for the earlier barbotine tiles as it may have been thought that the design may well not adhere well to a dust-pressed body after firing.

Dust pressed greenish body, 6 x 6 in, transfer printed and hand coloured under glaze, ladder back with printed pattern S.562 and registration mark, Sherwin & Cotton, design registered 4 May 1881.
The outer panels refer to the four seasons, and on the central urn are signs of the zodiac. Also occurs with other designs in place of the central urn.
