Craven Dunnill sample tile
(M156)
Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, printed over glaze with a colour scale hand painted below, marked Craven Dunnill & Co Jackfield England, Bruff's Patent No 3727/09, moulded 1, A and eighteen dots arranged 3x6. c.1909.
Pencilled on reverse "Mrs Wilmot... (with an unreadable address)", "Wet fleshes", "Dry ashes". The patent refers to the tile back which made the tile lighter, thus using less clay. The tile is probably a trial piece to test colour pigments using a design meant for a plate.
