Sunflower tiles

Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, M172 transfer printed and hand coloured under glaze, M173 relief moulded with coloured glazes, distinctive reverse, possibly Steele & Wood, c.1885.
This is an interesting opportunity to see the same design executed by transfer print and by relief moulding. The sunflower was a popular subject within the Arts and Crafts Movement. Both tiles have indentical reverses and were made at the same factory.

Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, transfer printed and hand coloured under glaze, target back with printed pattern No 22 and registration mark, T & R Boote blank, design registered on 13 January 1882 to Decorative Art Tile Co Hanley.
This tile was also made with the lady facing right.

Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, moulded Arts & Crafts design, decorated with coloured glazes, reverse as fig.96 p.138 Austwick, Mintons China Works, c.1880.
This design was executed in many colourways.

Dust pressed greenish body, 6 x 6 in, transfer printed and hand coloured under glaze, ladder back with printed pattern S.562 and registration mark, Sherwin & Cotton, design registered 4 May 1881.
The outer panels refer to the four seasons, and on the central urn are signs of the zodiac. Also occurs with other designs in place of the central urn.

This design appears in Austwick (page 92, fig.241) as Mintons China Works.
