(M167) Dust pressed buff body, 6 x 6 in, hand decorated in glaze, blank marked BCM/GW&S, blank by George Wooliscroft, decorated by Dunsmore Tiles, c.1930. This reverse is interesting, the moulded mark is quite faint and the arrow marks the raised bar where the mark can be found. Oddly, only three corners of the reverse have a chevron indent. The BCM mark is found on several tiles from various companies and is possibly a trade association or similar body (British Ceramics Manufacturers??). If anyone knows what the letters stand for - please let me know. |
(M153) Dust pressed, 6 x 6 in, buff body, hand decorated over white satin finish glaze, the black coloured outline cut into the white glaze surface, moulded mark Malkin England 459 6230, pencil mark "Wild", April 1959. A good example of the style of that period and possibly decorated by Dorincourt or Kenneth Clark. |

(M161) Dust pressed, 4 x 4 in, moulded in relief to imitate tube lining, decorated with coloured glazes, marked Jeffrey England 48, c.1948. Jeffrey were the final company in a long line of Hereford tile makers. Established in 1927 by JGM Jeffrey and his son, the works chemist at Thynnes tile works. They started their own tile factory on land beside Hereford Railway Station where they had six presses and continued until being taken over by H&R Johnson in 1958. During the war tile making stopped, and the factory was used as a food storage depot. Their output was primarily mottled fireplace tiles, so the above tile was designed as an insert for a slabbed fireplace. It was quite unusual to make decorated tiles in the late 40s as the government imposed a massive 240% purchase tax on decorated tiles in order to discourage their manufacture in persuance of austerity measures. | ![]() (M076) Dust pressed, 4 x 4 in, underglaze block printed with airbrush stencilling, 'Christine' written in pencilled mirror writing, blank marked Minton Tiles Made in England, decorated by Dunsmore Tiles, c. 1930.
