Mackworth Castle

Mackworth Castle, a hidden relic of Derby's past. c1495

Just outside Derby, a few yards to the north of the busy A52 road to Ashbourne is a sunken lane running through the old village of Mackworth. Mackworth Castle, as it is known, can be seen on this tranquil country backwater.
It's exact history is something of a mystery. It may have been built as a folly, but more likely as a gatehouse to a house that was never built. (A large platform for a house has been found to the north of the gatehouse.)

Locally collected honey can be purchased from the farmhouse behind the castle.
