Hardwick Hall
Hardwick Hall
The initials "E.S." stand prominently on all the hall's parapets, a token indication of the wealth and power of Elizabeth Shrewsbury, more commonly known as Bess of Hardwick.
The hall seems to be more glass than stone, with massive windows stretching almost from floor to ceiling in every room on every floor. The building of the present Hardwick Hall was commenced in 1591, about a hundred yards away from the first hall, which is now called the Old Hall. The Old Hall dates from around 1586, but was never completed and still stands tall and ruinous close by.

Chimney pieces - Old Hall
Despite the ravages of time, several chimney piece plaster panels have survived in the Old Hall. This is despite the structure being roofless and without intervening floors to offer protection.
