The centre shield features the old Derby Corporation seal of a buck sitting between two oak trees within a fenced park. Either side are two rampant bucks with sprigs of broom on their shoulders. The crest is a ram, wearing a golden collar, strutting between two sprigs of broom. The ram signifies one of Derby's earliest industries - that of wool combing. The motto "Industria Virtus et Fortitudo" translates "Diligence Courage and Strength".
